New to tango? We’re glad you’re here! Below, we have compiled a quick guide to some of the etiquette and códigos you will experience when attending a tango event that are a little different from other social dances.
Navigating the etiquette at a milonga (a social dance event) is an important part of Argentine tango culture. Here’s a beginner’s guide to help you feel comfortable and respectful in the milonga environment:
Understanding the Milonga
What is a Milonga? A milonga is a social dance event where people gather to dance Argentine tango. It’s not just about dancing; it’s also about socializing, enjoying the music, and being part of the tango community.
The Atmosphere. Milongas often have a formal or semi-formal atmosphere. Dress smartly and appropriately, keeping in mind that tango is a sophisticated and elegant dance.
Basic Etiquette
The Cabeceo. The cabeceo is a traditional way of inviting someone to dance. It’s done through eye contact and a slight nod or gesture from across the room.
How to Use It: Make eye contact with someone you’d like to dance with, and if they acknowledge you with a nod or smile, you can approach them to dance. If they don’t respond, respect their space and try with someone else.
Asking for a Dance
In Person: If the cabeceo isn’t possible, you can ask someone directly, but be polite and respectful. A simple “Would you like to dance?” works well.
Respecting Responses: If someone declines, don’t take it personally. They might be resting or trying to dance with someone else.
Note that verbally asking for a dance is considered rude or inappropriate as one becomes more experienced in tango. If one verbally asks for dance, it can be indication that they are new to tango and more experienced dancers may decline from dancing.
Accepting or Declining a Dance
Acceptance: If you agree to a dance, smile and enjoy the moment. Don’t worry about impressing your partner; focus on connecting and having fun.
Declining: If you decline, do so politely. You can say, “Thank you, but I’m resting right now,” or simply smile and shake your head.
On the Dance Floor
The Line of Dance. The dance floor is organized in a counterclockwise direction, with dancers moving along a circular line. Follow this line to avoid collisions.
Positioning: Maintain your position within the line of dance and be aware of dancers around you.
Respecting Space. Don’t crowd other dancers. Keep a respectful distance and adjust your movements to fit the available space.
Navigating. When changing direction or making turns, do so smoothly and with consideration for others.
Dancing with Grace. Lead and Follow: Follow the lead with grace, and for leaders, be clear and gentle in your guidance. Good communication and connection are key.
Footwork. Be mindful of your footwork to avoid stepping on your partner or others around you.
Social and Cultural Norms
Politeness. General Courtesy: Be polite and friendly with everyone, whether you’re dancing with them or not. A smile and a nod can go a long way.
Thank You: After a dance, thank your partner with a smile or a kind word. This shows appreciation for the shared experience.
Resting. Taking Breaks: If you need a break, step off the dance floor quietly and respectfully. This helps avoid disrupting the flow of the dance.
Dress Code. Dress Appropriately: While dress codes can vary, aim to dress smartly and elegantly. Avoid overly casual or flashy clothing that might draw unnecessary attention.
Special Considerations
New to the Milonga. Be Patient: If you’re new, take your time to observe and get a feel for the environment before jumping in. Most dancers will appreciate your effort to understand the etiquette.
Observing Others. Learning by Watching: Pay attention to how experienced dancers behave. This can provide insights into proper etiquette and the overall atmosphere of the milonga.
Dealing with Misunderstandings. Stay Calm: If a misunderstanding occurs, stay calm and polite. Clear communication and a positive attitude can help resolve any issues smoothly.
Enjoying the Milonga
Have Fun. Focus on Enjoyment: The primary goal of a milonga is to enjoy dancing and the company of others. Embrace the experience and let yourself have fun.
Connect with the Community. Building Relationships: Milongas are a great opportunity to build connections within the tango community. Be open and friendly, and you’ll likely find yourself welcomed warmly.
By following these guidelines, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy your time at a milonga and become a respected member of the tango community.
