This Weekend in Tango, August 15-18, 2013

As usual we kick off the weekend with the Beginner class TONIGHT at 6:30 PM. Guest teacher Cecil Ho will lead the class into the ocho. After class, stick around for the weekly Thursday night práctica ($5).

Tomorrow the Third Friday Milonga at Open Eye Café in Carrboro ($5) will feature our friend, Tetsuo Nishihara, who will teach the FREE introductory class and DJ. For more information, visit the Triangle Tango website.

And as always on Sunday, we rest up for classes on Monday. Jae will be back to continue working on the ocho cortado with the Intermediate class. Students in the Advanced class will round out their volcadas.

This Weekend in Tango, August 8-11, 2013

This weekend is our favorite weekend in tango! We host the August Milonga Utopia on Saturday, August 10th from 9PM to 2AM at Triangle Dance Studios ($10). We are honored to have special guest DJ Lisa Jacobs, host of Catwalk Milonga in Asheville.  She is fresh from her guest DJ performance in Saltwater, ME and will bring her vintage mix of music to the Triangle.

As usual, tonight we begin the weekend with the Beginner class at 6:30 PM to continue work on the walk to the cross. Intermediate and Advanced students can join us at the weekly práctica at 7:30 PM ($5) to master those techniques we learned in class.

Speaking of Monday classes, Jae will be taking a much-needed vacation next week so all classes will be taught by guest teachers. Cecil Ho will lead Intermediate students in exploring the ocho cortado and John Singletary will teach Advanced students larger linear boleos and volcadas into the cross.

This Weekend in Tango, August 1-4, 2013

As usual we start the weekend with the Beginner series TONIGHT at 6:30 PM. For the fourth class, we will build on what we learned last week by using the cross system to lead the cross.

After class, stick around for the weekly Thursday práctica from 7:30-10:00PM ($5).

Saturday, August 3rd is Triangle Tango’s First Saturday Milonga at TDS ($8), featuring our friend, Cecil Ho, as host and DJ. Please visit their website for more details.

As always on Sundays, we rest up for our Intermediate and Advanced classes on Mondays. Intermediate students will learn a classic tango move, the ocho cortado. Advanced students will begin a new monthly topic with guest teacher, John Singletary: Sweeping Her Off Her Feet with Off-Axis Moves.

This Weekend in Tango, July 25–28, 2013

As usual we start the weekend with the Beginner series TONIGHT at 6:30 PM at TDS. For the third class, we will learn how to walk in cross system.

After class, stick around for the weekly Thursday práctica at 7:30 PM at TDS ($5). Tonight’s event is our only opportunity to dance this weekend, so be there!

As always on Sundays, we rest up for our Intermediate and Advanced classes on Mondays. Intermediate students will continue working with using the check step to change direction. Advanced students will use the leader’s back sacada to set up the follower’s sacada.

Looking ahead to the August Milonga Utopia, we will be welcoming guest DJ from Asheville, Lisa Jacobs. So let’s keep practicing what we’re learning in class to get ready for her amazing tandas!

This Weekend in Tango, July 18-21, 2013

We kick off the weekend with the second class of the Beginner series. Last week we learned how to walk on the beat and with a partner. In class, we will build on those skills and learn more about the embrace and movement. Don’t worry if you’ve missed the first class—just jump right in!

Now that Beginner classes have begun, the weekly Thursday práctica starts at 7:30 ($5). We had a great turnout last week and hope to see more people tonight!

There are two milongas for your dancing pleasure. Enjoy tango in a casual atmosphere at Triangle Tango’s Third Friday Milonga at Open Eye Café in Carrboro ($5). The FREE intro lesson starts at 8 PM and the milonga goes from 9:00-11:30 PM.

For a more elegant tango experience, go to Saturday night’s Milonga Carolina at Café Parizade in Durham ($10). This event is hosted by last week’s DJ, Thierry Olivry, and features a glass of wine and excellent dancing from 10:00 PM to 1:30 AM.

This Weekend in Tango, July 11-14, 2013

A very exciting weekend of tango awaits us!  Our Beginner class kicks off the weekend TONIGHT at 6:30 PM at TDS ($10 drop-ins; $65 for the series). This 8-week course will teach the basic techniques of Argentinean tango, including today’s class topic, the tango walk and embrace. The weekly Thursday practica starts immediately after the class at 7:30 ($5).

Saturday, July 13th is our monthly Milonga Utopia (9:00 PM to 2:00 AM at TDS). DJ Thierry Olivry will be sure to set our hearts and feet ablaze with his wonderful tandas. As always, we’ll have a raffle for a sparkling door prize and plenty of munchies ($10; $7 for Tango Utopia students).

As always on Sunday, we rest up for Monday’s classes. Intermediate students will continue practicing controlled stops and Advanced students will learn back sacadas.

This Weekend in Tango, July 4-7, 2013

We are heating up the dance floor this Fourth of July holiday weekend, starting with TONIGHT’S práctica at TDS (7-9 PM, $5). Tango Utopia guest teacher, Cecil Ho, will host this event for those of us who plan to stay in town.

Saturday, July 6th is another opportunity to dance at Triangle Tango’s First Saturday Milonga at TDS (9 PM-1 AM, $8). The DJ for this event is none other than our fearless leader, Jae Grisham. We hope to see some familiar faces on the dance floor, especially those of you who attended the Student Milonga last week.

As always on Sundays, we rest up in preparation for classes. The new series for Fundamental/Intermediate and Intermediate/Advanced tango classes start Monday, July 8th and Beginner classes start on Thursday, July 11th. Remember, students who sign up via Meetup and pay for the entire series will get a discount.

This Weekend in Tango, June 27-30th, 2013

Thanks for coming out to the Student Milonga on Monday. We certainly enjoyed seeing you there and hope you feel more prepared to come out to a regular milonga. You may want to try out your skills at the Mid-Summer Fifth Saturday Fix on June 29th from 9 PM to 1 AM, an informal milonga hosted at a private home. TONIGHT’s weekly práctica at Triangle Dance Studios (7:00-9:30 PM, $5) is your opportunity to work on all the skills you learned throughout the class series  until the new series of classes begin on July 8th.

We have three classes for each level of dancer. Those new to tango or wanting to brush up on basic skills should come to our BEGINNER classes on THURSDAYS from 6:30-7:30 PM, starting on July 11th . This class will teach you the basis techniques of Argentine tango. Hang around after class and attend the weekly práctica.

Those dancers with some experience with tango can attend the FUNDAMENTAL/INTERMEDIATE    classes on MONDAYS from 7-8 PM, starting on July 8th. This class will help you refine techniques such as core strength, extension, balance, and connection.

More advanced dancers are invited to attend the INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED class on MONDAYS from 9-10 PM, starting July 8th. This class will feature guest teachers who will assist Jae in teaching a specific topic each month.

Student Milonga

TangoUtopia is hosting a Student Milonga give beginners a chance to learn what to do and what to expect at a milonga. The evening will cover the basics of etiquette and music (e.g., tandas and cortinas), and of course, give everyone an opportunity to dance. Experienced dancers are encouraged to attend this event to help new dancers develop the confidence to come to one of our Triangle-area milongas. Please dress to impress!
